My mom asked about the citizenship status of my girlfriend at the dinner table. Is that racist or was she just looking out for me?

My family has seen pictures of my girlfriend on my instagram but never in person because we live in two different parts of Texas. So they finally met her for the first time and it was now obvious she was Hispanic because of her accent. Just on looks alone and her name, she looks entirely white. She is also extremely westernized. So anyway we visited my family this weekend and they started asking questions about her citizenship and how her family became citizens. They didn’t ask if her grandfather illegally crossed over but it was as if they were asking that… my girlfriend didn’t mind the questions and she was happy to share

Not racist. I mean would it be racist if your girlfriend was from Sweden and you mother asked her immigration status? It's only natural to ask such questions such as is she a us citizen? Or if she isn't had she applied? Will she have to return to Sweden and will you her son be going with her?

I'm not following.. if she has a heavy accent, chances are she wasn't born in US. Just speculating here but could I be that they seeing you moving way to fast and haven't really shared too much information about your girlfriend to your parents. Also, why are you trying to create issue between your girlfriend and your mom.. you ask your girlfriend what she thought about the comment and she may have not even noticed or cared. Now she seeing how you reacting and possibly gets bad feelings towards your mom
