How would you feel if someone stopped talking to you? You know they are going through a hard time in their life. After a week of not talking, they tell you that they actually like you so they were distancing themselves from you.

Honestly this happens all the time, it usually means they like, but they do not like themselves. They feel that they are inadequate in some way and that you would be better without them. I have had this happen to me more than once. It bullshits of course, but trust do not try to have relationships with people like this it ends terribly bad.

If this happens, it's because that person really liked you but felt like they have no chance with you. So to avoid the pain they distance themselves for a while thinking that the feelings will fade away. If I like that person too then I'd feel hurt. But as in your case, if they reveal the story I'd be happy.
