There's a study from Cornell University that looks at data on young American couples (married and unmarried couples).
The author found that a man is more likely to cheat on his partner if he is more financially dependent on her. And men who are completely dependent on their girlfriends or wives are five times more likely to cheat than men who earn the same amount as their partners.
I think men are more loyal to their partners if they believe the partner belongs to them and a man who believes he does not have full control of the women’s love and desire for him, might not feel like she is fully his, so he is less hard working at maintaining her for himself, and cheats on her with less guilt.
There's a reason why that study didn't get much traction other than to state the obvious, which is "men who feel powerless because they're income dependent are more likely to cheat than women in the same position". But the data showed the difference to be only 7% of men compared to 3% of women, and with African-American and Hispanic men cheating more than white men.
That study involved 2,583 men and women, and is over 15 years old. It was not peer-reviewed and even the socialist who conducted it questioned the honesty of the respondents. The other data that is lacking is a breakdown of race, income and education levels, although it is "noted" that greater the education level, the less likely cheating is to occur, and the same for strong religious ties.
Personally, I believe the concept makes sense, but from a data gathering standpoint, as I said, this study left a lot to be desired.
First: i don't believe low income men are more likely to cheat on a higher income girlfriend. Data may prove this claim and i'm more than sure that this has happened a lot.
Second: what's the point in this statement? if it is to tell women to go after high earners expecting them to be less likely to cheat, then good luck trying to get one of them to commit and Even more luck on the eventual wake up call.

I'd wager that a lot of the men who make less are less goal-driven than others, and those are just the same type of men to cheat.
I would argue that running a household will and raising well adjusted children is more important than a paying job. Anyone can make money.

As someone who is actually in academia, specifically information science, I can attest to the fact that sponsors of studies tend to get what they pay for, and that data is a lot easier to massage than most people realize via sophistry and 'creative interpretation'. Also, a study with n=89 is hardly generalizable. Even when I concede an advantage to you, it still isn't good enough. It's probably because women that make more than their husband's tend to feel superior to them. Within that dynamic, women seem to most often treat their husband's with contempt, which ultimately appears to boil down to hypergamy. Even in the modern day where men and women are encouraged to work together, most women such as CEOs or just women that make good money, still want and actively seek men that make more than them. So it appears that the larger reason for this behavior is simply that evolution hasn't quite caught up to our modern lives. Even we as men have a version of this. Society often rightfully so paints us as the gender that is less willing to commit, because most men have a hard time sticking with one woman. This has arguably changed to some degree with hookup culture, but that's a topic for another thread. As men, we seem to be programmed with the desire to spread our seed due to mother nature's incentive for us to reproduce and survive as a species. So in a nutshell, a lack of self awareness appears to be the main cause.
