Is this guy into talking to me or not if he said this?

I’ve been reconnecting with this guy I used to know and study with recently after he moved interstate. He doesn’t initiate many messages but responds so quickly, I was worried he didn’t want to talk to me so I asked him but he said it was honestly fine and he hoped I was ok with a smile emoji.
When we first met he would act into me and flirt etc and I admitted I like him once but he said he didn’t feel the same way at the time.
Is he into talking to me or just being nice?
