"Beethoven's 9th Symphony"
Performed by the Albany Symphony Orchestra
Troy Savings Bank Music Hall
Troy NY
S 06 OCT 1990I had never heard Beethoven's 9th nor ever been to a live symphony concert before.
I had a new beautiful girlfriend at the time just having become a formal couple on W 22 AUG 1990. She was a senior at our college and I was a PhD student. She was active in our college's Chorale group and could play piano. She said "Let's go!" and, knowing I'd never done anything like this, she tried to prepare me because this wasn't just a classical music concert... this was Beethoven's 9th! His "Chorale" in which there is singing in the 4th movement. It's famous for "Ode to Joy" which is instantly recognizable. At over an hour long, Beethoven's 9th is considered by many as the greatest piece of music ever written. Even Kurt Vonnegut, in his 1985 novel "Galapagos" had a multiply-used cavalier line about newly dead characters: "Well, he wasn't going to write Beethoven's 9th Symphony anyway."
I was already hopelessly in love with her by the time we became a couple, but, as I sat in amazement next to her transfixed by what I was experiencing, I silently realized that "Yes. This is the girl I want to marry."
I never had any doubts and, emotionally, all my eggs were in the one basket that she held.
Sadly, on her mother's 50th birthday, 12 JAN 1992, she had other plans.
I never fully recovered.
So, I play that song on 22 AUG and 12 JAN and the first Saturday in October to honor that moment and to honor her and what she did for me and to me.
I always cry at the end when I hear it in private like on Symphony Hall on SiriusXM or my local classical music station.
I believe this is the version that I have on CD:

Robbers by the 1975
This song takes me back to high school (year 2013) and when I was living with my parents in this beautiful neighbourhood full of trees. It also reminds me of myself playing guitar in my room and going to music school after class. Great times, despite feeling so alone around that time in my life. I was a bit avantgard compared to my peers and introverted af. My father would drop me at school with my younger sister and I was sometimes listening to The 1975's first LP on my headphones or in the car system. Cold mornings, blue sky and music playing on my ears. This LP is genius if we're talking modern art. Its like they've invented a new style of playing. At around this time I started exploring music through some alt/indie rock acts but the1975 stood out. As I became more mature I started listening to a more varied spectrum of genres. A great band that I like a lot called The Blue Nile, from the 80s, influenced matt healy as he said in an interview.
Keep Holding On by Avril Lavigne reminds me of my teen years, singing on Friday nights with my bestie.
before you go - reminds me of when my mom's sister died...

I was a Junior in high school. She was 13 years old and the “goodest” good girl at church. We had flirted heavily, but it was never more than flirting. Her parents were downstairs drinking coffee with my parents. She clicked the remote for her CD player and Blues Traveler came on at medium-high volume. She closed the door, pushed me up against it…and immediately dropped to her knees and unzipped me. There is an jnbreakable connection between that song and that moment.
She was not a “good girl” behind closed doors.
