Is it toxic by adding "more" to "I love you" in response to "i love you"?

I'm sure some relationships are so good you feel comfy saying it despite it being a risk and im aware it is often said without meaning

but even so is the thought behind it- competing rather than appreciating the other's efforts

It depends on the person and how they receive that phrase. For some it’s just terms of endearment expressing how deeply they love each other. I love you more, I love you most, etc., but it works for within their relationship. I know that for some people though it can come off as competitive, overwhelming, pressuring, and all of that.

My former roommate used to play the "I love you more" stupidity with women. It sounds like something a 7 years old would say. He got dumped by 3 different women within one month, because of that and because he kept trying to sell them some canned soup poetry. I laughed at him when one of the women was on speaker phone and he was reciting the same poem to her that he had tried on the other two women, and I was like, "You idiot, you can't just recite the same canned soup poem to three different women and expect it to work on them."

It really depends, as someone else said, on how that person receives it. Some people may think you're one-upping them if you do that, even if that wasn't your intention.

Yea when i used to say I love you more, i probably did mean it but it mostly meant I’m gonna win this little competition 🤣

Whats funny is, most will say i love you MORE/MOST/TO INFINITY AND BEYOND... but i doubt no one ever answered “i love you unconditionally”. That would be the true winner. I have yet to love a boyfriend unconditionally. That mf would have to be my husband or something.

I have never thought of it this way. I think the competition is between who is the more lovable, rather who is doing the most loving.
