Usually to preserve their own family’s wealth. This was the primary reason for arranged marriages and dowries many generations ago. The irony of modern feminists’ tropes about arranged marriages benefiting men exclusively is pure ignorance. The veil tradition was meant to keep men from knowing that they’re marrying an under-bridge dwelling troll just to preserve their family’s money. Same with the tradition of men not seeing their betrothed before the actual ceremony. “Bad luck” indeed. If a man caught a glimpse of the mutt to whom he was promised and skipped town, his father still owed the dowry, and often another son. Funny how our “patriarchy” doesn’t disseminate THOSE facts, huh?
