Based on my experience, people cheat for these reasons:

Variety: I think you could still love your partner and still cheat on them mainly because of the appeal of a new experience. The human brain is hardwired to be attracted to variety. That’s one most people don't eat the same foods daily

Opportunity: Circumstances and situations arise that create an opportunity for someone to cheat on their partner. For example, if someone is away from their partner for an extended period of time, they may be more susceptible to cheating if they meet someone who they find attractive and who is interested in them.

Opportunity can also arise in social situations where people are in close proximity to each other, such as at work or at social events. When people spend a lot of time together and get to know each other well, they may develop feelings for each other that can lead to cheating.

I used to cheat on an ex girlfriend (my first girlfriend) many years ago. And because I wasn't happy with her and I was too weal to break up.
I tried to break up 3 times with her, the 3 times she begged me not to and I caved in.

So I just kept dating her and cheated on her every time I felt love or lust, those exciting new emotions that I wasn't getting from my girlfriend.

Do I think my actions were justified? No
Do I think I was weak? Yes.
Do I regret what I did? Yes.
Do I think I was a coward? Yes.
Am I ashamed of what I did? Yes.

But life if full of teachings and I guess we all grow up. Nobody is immune to being an ashole, the important thing is that we learn how not to be one anymore.

I eventually broke up with her and from there on, every time I wasn't happy anymore, it became easier to finish the deal.

Cheaters are trash, selfish and cowards. There's never a good reason to cheat. Just break up and move on before starting with someone new, it really ain't that hard. The problem is deep down they like being pieces of shit otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it.

I would say that guys cheat because they want variety in their sex life, or they want to prove to themselves that they still got it. If you're dating a thin girl, maybe you want to try a curvy girl; if you're dating an innocent girl, who's very new to sex, you may want to try smashing a sl@t. Different races, etc. can just be a way of trying out new things, but for a guy this doesn't necessarily mean that he doesn't love his girlfriend/ wife, as strange as that is to hear.
