who think it's actual stealing are weird. I already know what my friend looks like. My friend shares a picture to the public. I tell my friend I like this photo of them. Sometimes i even show them which photo so it's clear which i like. They know I have photos BESIDES what they send me direct. Suppose you wanted to make a surprise photo album? How? Public shared photos.
Friend broke their phone- lost photos n grateful I've them still. Same people don't take pics of your baby until they permit.

I don't call it stealing. I'm the family genealogist and I often download pictures of friends and relatives from their online public posts to add to their entry in the genealogy program, which I periodically share with them.

I haven't personally done that. However, people air dirty laundry all the time on social media. So, I could see why they may feel the need to screenshot an incriminating status like "I cheated last night" before its taken down.
