My girlfriend and I are planning to move together in the same apartment because we have been together for a while and we spend much time at the other's place and we think it's worth moving together to share the rent. The problem is that she wants to have a dog, but I don't, because I was bitten by a dog as a kid and now I am afraid of dogs. I am not as afraid as used to be, but I wouldn't live with one in the same house. We haven't talked about it much as I don't express my fears openly to women. She always told me she liked dogs and I omitted to tell her about my fear, but I didn't lie, because I find dogs cute if I see them in pictures and they are at a certain distance. I really don't want to have a dog around me, but it might not be fair if she sacrificed her wish for me. Do you think that it's a deal breaker and we should break up? Should I go to therapy to overcome my fear? Should I live in fear with a dog for a while and see if I get used to it?

It's important to have an open and honest conversation with your girlfriend about your feelings regarding having a dog. While it's understandable that she may want a pet, it's also understandable that you have a fear of dogs due to a past experience. It's important to communicate your feelings to her and to work together to find a solution that works for both of you.
One potential solution could be to seek out therapy to work on your fear of dogs. This could help you to overcome your fear and feel more comfortable around dogs. However, it's important to remember that therapy is a personal decision and should not be done solely to please your partner.
Another solution could be to compromise by getting a smaller or less intimidating pet, such as a cat or a fish. This could allow your girlfriend to have a pet while also respecting your fear of dogs.
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to get a pet is up to both of you. It's important to have an open and honest conversation about your feelings and to work together to find a solution that works for both of you. If you are unable to come to a consensus, it may be a sign that your relationship is not compatible in the long run, but it's important to have this conversation before making any decisions.
