1.7K opinions shared on Relationships topic. People who believe in love at first sight don't really know what love is. Love is something that builds as two people choose to create and nurture a relationship. It's the depth that develops, not the superficial. If it's instantaneous, then it's based solely on physical appearance, and that won't hold a relationship together over time.
Quality relationships prioritize making sure both always feel safe, secure and special. How can anyone feel safe, secure and special the first time you see someone? Yes, we can be drawn to a person when we first meet. We see qualities that impress us, so we're drawn in. I'm sure you've heard of the beautiful woman who opened her mouth and instantly turned ugly. Never assume infatuation has anything to do with what follows. I see limerence mentioned here. Actually limerence involves an all-consuming passion and intrusive thoughts, which doesn't happen instantaneously.

Well, I’m going to have to strongly disagree, since I married my husband after nearly two months of meeting him. That was almost 11 years ago. Sure, we’ve built a lasting marriage over time, but we didn’t get married based on appearances. I knew that night I was going to marry him. I called my mom to tell her I just met my husband. Sure, she may have thought I was crazy. I seen our life together; that night. I don’t know how else to explain it. I’m sure we’re the exception and not the rule, but that isn’t to say it simply can’t happen. Our marriage has long surpassed some of our friends and families marriages, who were together for years, and divorced. So, I don’t really believe time is the deciding factor. We are still madly in love. Our marriage has been blessed, in all aspects. Our home, our careers, our family. Truly blessed. And it happened over a chance meeting. Somewhere I was never supposed to be that night. So let me assure you, it can and does happen.

@veronicasue2 I'm not saying it never happens. I've just noticed how unlikely it is to work out that way. You can also put a dollar into a slot machine and become an instant millionaire, but what's the likelihood of that happening? Don't encourage people to place bets on unlikely results.

+1 yYes, or rather, the potential is there for the relationship right from the first moment.

"True" love requires knowledge, and you don't really know anything about someone the first moment you lay eyes on them. But an amazing connection can be had and built upon, nonetheless. Just from the first impression, visual, pheromones, chemistry, the feeling in your heart. From there it can grow, having a boost of a start.
It's a beautiful thing, and I know I have many people I've loved for a long time and continue to love, whom I had a good feeling about from the first moment.

I voted no but I was being literal. I do believe love can happen when you first meet somebody but not literally at the first sight of them. Although I have had three guys claim they fell in love with me at first sight, I don't really believe that. I think it is just something people say.
For myself I can't feel love for a guy until I have a sense of what kind of person he is and that is v. difficult maybe impossible just by seeing him for a few seconds, I might get a good feeling about him at first sight but I wouldn't say love. JMO maybe I am being persnickety!

+1 yHow can you fall in love without even knowing them?
I believe in attraction and chemistry at first sight but if that is developing to love depends on the person.
Not everyone that you find interesting or captivating from the first sight, is going to be a good person or worth it.10 Reply

I voted yes because while it's very uncommon (especially when it's mutual), its something only time will tell. You can't tell right off the first months or years. Love at first sight can really just be infatuation/limerence since it is based off looks and appeal and having some kind of perceived alluring trait.
You'll only be able to tell retrospectively if it was love or infatuation/limerence.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yIt's certainly possible to fall in love at first sight—but there's a catch. You need to be able to take the time after that first meeting to really get to know each other, explains Dubrow. It's only then that you can figure out if it's a good match or not

+1 yDepends what you mean at first sight, I know If I get good vibes off stone I can imagine a future together but I wouldn't say that's love, at first sight, more like known potential at first sight and not even sight, more of at first meet

That’s the silliest thing I’ve heard.
How can you love someone if you don’t know her inside and out, if you haven’t seen him at his worst and still loved him there.

+1 yYes and you can fall in love multiple times, so loving in first sight exists and is very common, you see something you really like which matches your definition of perfect, you'll love it and the same easily applies to people

+1 yI pick yes because it exists. Because you can know that you love a person and recognize how you feel about them as soon as you see each other. Just because it's love at first sight does not mean get married the same day.

+1 yNo I do not believe in love at first sight because I had been disappointed in the past when I got to know the girl (s).
