There's three types of men in relationships.

The first type of man wants a girl all to themselves. They want to be the only person who sees his girl in her beauty. He prefers his girl dress modestly in public, because he wants to be the only man in the world who gets sexually aroused by her. He protects her jealously.

The second type of man is the man in this question. He wants to show off his girl to all the boys, specifically because he wants to get all of them sexually aroused by his wife, just so that he can take her away and leave them disappointed. He wants all of them to be jealous of him. Usually such men have some sort of power trip streak, and by showing off his wife he's exerting dominance over his fellow males. This man requests his wife to dress as scantily as possible, and show off all of her assets. One famous example is King Ahasuerus of Persia, who summoned Queen Vashti to show off her beauty to all the nobles while drunk.

The third type of man is the feminist. He doesn't give any instruction to the wife and allows the wife to dominate the relationship, either because his wife is more alpha than he is, or because he has strongly rooted beliefs that he should in no way have authority over his wife.

It's a status thing.
Kind of like buying an expensive car.
Look what I can buy.
I would much rather find someone that I actually liked, and she liked me for who I am, not what I can buy.
I've always had nice cars, but on the first few dates I always used my pickup trucks. They were clean, but not super fancy, so it didn't look like I was doing well.
So if they weren't good enough for whomever. I was fine with that.

Guys are very visual and they want to impress their friends and colleagues with how hot their wife is. This is especially big with men in their forties and fifties (don’t ask me how I know this but trust me I do).

It's about impressing other men.

Same as women try to impress other women with how rich they guy they attracted is, men want to impress other men with how hot the girl they attracted is.

What is impresses women most is a man's ability to provide and what impresses men most is a woman's looks. And men are competitive with other men and women competitive with other women. So each enjoys the feeling of impressing other members of their own sex with how successful they are.

If I got to have a wife or girlfriend I can "show off" I will love it. Of course, as long as she wasn't completely bitchy all the time, a combination which is unfortunately becoming mutually exclusive in the modern days.
