Percentage contribution (i. e. they pay more because they make more, but I'll contribute a proportion of my income)

Depends on your relative financial situations. If you are similar, then splitting makes sense. If one person has far more wealth, then you will be negatively impacting your common lifestyle by splitting.

I think the key is to be sure there is a clean well understood exit strategy if either of you wants to end things.
