Why would a man compare a woman to his ex but in a good way?

My coworkers and I often have friendly conversations,

Recently he started dating someone from Netherlands too and asked me how my Dutch date was doing.

I told him we stopped dating.

He started talking about things and told me in the end “You actually remind me of my ex and not in a bad way. I see lots of good similarities.”

When I asked him “how?”

He said “You’re extroverted, optimistic, kind, strong willed and you know exactly what you want. She didn’t.”

To give her a compliment. Saying that she did something better than his ex because at least guys are aware that women compare each other. So in a way he says he likes your attitude and character but uses a comparison to show that he doesn't compliment you because he loves you.

This doesn't make sense. If he reminds you of his ex, but listed of series of things she wasn't, but yet those are qualities you have--then you're not being reminded of her at all. You're different from her. He listed off some positive traits that you have and she didn't. Consider it a compliment.

Sounded like his ex girlfriend had a lot of characteristics that he loved, but if she didn't know what she wanted, I suppose that included him. It takes two people to get together, but only one to end it.

Well. If you remind him of his ex. Then his ex would be exactly like you to begin with. He wouldn't say she didn't have the same personal traits like you.
