A shooting happens in the hometown of a couple and the boyfriend has bad anxiety and a shooting occurred in the same place the couple was just an hour before and it pushes the boyfriend to never feeling safe out at big public events, and now the girlfriend wants to continue going out and says he is over reacting. Who is right or wrong in this situation if anyone and how do they resolve something like this?

There’s always a risk of injury whenever we leave our homes.


One can’t live life by never going outdoors again.


So, he shouldn’t be afraid of going out forever.


As for the shooting, context is important for safety.


Who was the shooter and why were they shooting?


If it was a terrorist attack, then they are likely to not hit the same exact place twice in a row.


However, if it was a gang-related shooting, and this is now an ongoing turf-war. Then yes, it would be best to avoid THAT area until that situation has been resolved.


If it’s just a crime-ridden area in general, it may also be better to try going out to safer places of the city.


So, going out should not be stopped entirely. But, it’s still important to be smart about it.

If there's active concerns of attacks, it's prudent to be cautious. It's also valid to be worried.

However if the likelihood is low (i. e. the shooter has been caught or the attacks are motivated by something unrelated to the events your girlfriend is talking about), it's worth considering if your anxious reaction is unfounded.

I would say it's okay not to go, but your girlfriend may go if she wants.

If shooting related anxiety is keeping you from going out and having fun, it's time to consider therapy.

The boyfriend needs to understand that anything can happen anywhere, anytime. It may be too soon for him to feel comfortable going out, but he's going to have to leave the house eventually. The girlfriend should also try to be more understanding of the boyfriend's feelings and not ridicule him for being anxious after something terrible just happened.

I can see how that would be very scary, but on the other hand, life keeps going. You can't just stop living because of the 'what ifs' in life.

I am dealing with a similar situation. There have been machete killings and he still wants to go out but I do not. I do not think I am overreacting but I do think he is taking a huge risk

Get the boyfriend to get a concealed carry permit and get a gun. Get him to train with the gun.
