What are the signs that it might be time to end a relationship?

My friend asked me what she thought she should do about her tumultuous relationship with her husband and I asked her two things: "when you come home every night, do you have far more peaceful days in your own house with him, than you do bad," and " do you see yourself being happy with him 5 years from now?" I said if you too easily answer no, and no, then that is something to think about. If being in a relationship is the thing causing you the most amount of constant stress, anger, and resentment in your life, is it the right one for you? Every relationship is going to have bad periods and good, that is life, but it should not be hard every.single.day. to where you feel like your relationship is just a really bad job you can't seem to ever quit.

You can't quit a marriage like you can quit a simple relationship. Assets might be involved. Kids might be involved. One spouse might do far worse off financially after divorce. There is much more to a marriage than just to laugh and giggle every night. When you're married, you both have to compromise to make things work. Fact is vast majority of couples nowadays dont want to compromise

@nastyb If you read fully what I wrote, I said "that is something to think about," not you should get a divorce. I've known my friend for over 20 years, same with her husband. There was no point in any of our conversation where I said go off and get a divorce. That's not my place to decide for her. She did that on her own and that was after my advice to see if they could go to counseling to try to work things out (he flat out refused, so that didn't help the situation). Sometimes relationships just don't work out despite ones best efforts. Sometimes you need some outside advice to see a bigger picture as well because it can be hard to see the reality when you're in it. Trust, I'm pro-marriage, but I'm also pro-being happy and not feeling like you're dying inside every single day of your life just for the sake of staying married.

I'm just stating this because a lot of americans have unrealistic expectations of marriage. Marriage is supposed to be through good times and bad times, in sickness and in health, richer / poorer, till death do us part. The goal of marriage is to be there for each other forever , not to have happiness and giggles every night. Its wrong to just simply break up families just because things weren't as glowy as it used to be. There are a lot of consequences.

they are unhappy because they both refuse to compromise. A happy marriage is created, it doesn't just happen. Like I said before, when you're only interested in furthering your own selfish desires but paying no mind to your spouse's needs... you will get an unhappy marriage.

why do you think marriage has worked for THOUSANDS of years but absolutely has no chance of surviving over the past few decades?

lower your standards, respect marriage, work on things... and you will have a forever marriage.

We live in a society where parents cannot get along. Children seeing their fathers once every month is becoming the new norm.

Americans divorce because they don't respect marriage. Breaking up is easier than working on things... why would you have an incentive to work on things if you always believe there is always someone better out there?

When it starts to become toxic. Like not speaking to each other, ignoring one another, disrespecting one another, etc.

When there are more bad times than good. Sometimes, you have to way whether your moving ahead, standing still or going backwards in a relationship.

If you spend more time in a bad mood about the whole thing, then it may be time to throw in the towel, especially if their are unresolvable issues in the relationship.
