This may sound silly but, romanticise the "bad" times, if that makes any sense. I don't know if you watched Big Bang but, we know that Leonard and Penny's first kiss, their official first one, was her first Halloween she did way back in season one. She hated that it was only because of the situation. So, instead of considering it their FIRST kiss, she actually said "it was his birthday party" she threw for him, after he had never had one before (party). While it was Halloween, she wanted to make it about him and his birthday, not her own situation. It showed she truly cared about him
