Since I started heavily playing a certain multiplayer, people mistook me for a prepubescent boy because of my voice. I gave up correcting them--I only have one chance encounters with them through matchmaking anyway (and every time I did correct someone, they started to flirt, making me really uncomfortable). After concealing the fact I'm a girl, I got an overall better (authentic) interaction with teammates because of it. What also helped was the fact I was a big tomboy growing up and accumulated a lot of "guy" hobbies for small talk. Now the story, I met this guy (we'll call him Kyle) and his friend through a match, the games were going pretty well, when his friend asked how old I was. They joked around guessing ages 12-16 and I straight up told them my true age (21), which left them shocked (still under the assumption I was a boy, of course). I chalked it up to genetics--my mother sounds very young for her age, and so did my great-grandmother. Fast-forward a few months, I dug myself into a hole of lies with Kyle before I knew it. Kyle and I have a lot in common--he's a cool dude, I feel like an a-hole for not telling the truth right off the bat every time we talk--but I feel our interaction would have turned out very different had he known my gender. I just like how authentic he is without all the flirtatious routines. And the stuff he's told me I doubt he would ever tell a girl, which makes me feel even more invasive. I'm not interested in taking this relationship further but it would be nice to stop lying to someone I consider a friend at this point. I'm worried that it'll ruin our friendship because of this.
