If it was long streams of only images I could see it being a bit much for some people. I tend to change the way I reply to friends based on how they message me. Everyone expresses themselves differently, some people really dislike emojis and have expressed as much, so I leave them out to them, on purpose.

If you combine a short phrase or expression with an emoji, you won't be seen as boring. I also find it's not conversation word variability that engages people but emotional variability that engages people when you are having a text convo.
