It depends on the person. Some people just say shit because it's how they feel in the moment. Some people mean the shit they say forever. And some people feel that way for a while and then let it go.

I tend to be a man of my word. If I tell you we're done. We are done. Forever. But it takes a lot to get me there so you know if I say it, you done fucked up.

In my experience most people never REALLY mean the shit they say. They just get wrapped up in their emotions and let them do the talking. Give them a day or two. Maybe even a few weeks. Most often they'll come around cause they'll realize the shit wasn't that serious after all.

I had a friend in college who took my ex girlfriend's side in our breakup, and somehow got it into his head that I had done some really horrible things to her. It's interesting, because I actually don't even know what he thinks I did (he refuses to tell me).

He's just made abundantly clear that there will never be peace between us and has made a point of actively slandering my name to people whenever he gets the chance. This is a guy who I used to be friends with.

Hate is a strong word.
They are putting in a boundary. It's not up to you to undermine it, it's up to them to forgive or move on.

Let them know that you understand what they have expressed, and let them know what you would want, should that ever change.

Then after that, you just have to try move on. Respect the boundary just as you would hope someone else would respect yours
