Is “You Look Nice” a romantic compliment?

I constantly have to remind my boyfriend of 3.5 years that one of my love languages is words of affirmation, especially compliments! He’s making the effort to compliment me now but they really just consist of the occasional “you look nice today” or “your hair is pretty”. I’m so like wtf every time with the friendly ass compliments. That’s something you say to a co-worker or the lady at church. Not someone you see a future with. I’m acknowledging the effort but those words don’t really mean anything to me. Am I being emotional and ungrateful?

Your own coworkers probably give you better coompliments. That's because he's putting in too much effort. Anything he has to sit down to think about to come up with will not be as lubricating as speaking straight out of the balls. Compare the intellectual attempts to compliment as trying to get a melanistic tan using red light. It's just a wrong source. At a true horndog moment, I'll slip in the most lubricating words while actively trying not to! So let him speak out of his balls by not asking him to compliment you more but silently seducing him, and only opening the flower once his compliment satisfies you. Or only release our grip from his cogk once another cool spontaneous affirmation is made.

Because of what I just said, these deliberately structured words of affirmation are for real useless. If you disagree and just need him to compliment something more creative and complex, then suggest him to use chatgpt to generate new compliments. But that's something any psychopath can do, while allowing him to speak out of his balls will show you what he really thinks of you.

I think it really ruins the site's reputation, when all new users are greeted with anti-sexual negativity. And to answer one of her question, yes, the person sneezing does need a blessing. And the one who blesses them is the person who says "bless you". Humans have spiritual power, by blessing someone you are helping them.

Have you started to explain to him how he can correct this?
If he is doing something for you and he’s doing that wrong then why not correct him or communicate that with him. Clearly words of affirmation isn’t his love language so he’ll need to be taught how to love you according to you.
Leave him a couple romantic compliment examples. If he values your love language then he’ll correct this.

A better way would be to join compliments into conversations. Such as when you ask him a question, make the answer contain a compliment.

To me, any compliment that is specifically given on looks, the way of dressing or physical attributes are compliments that are given without really thinking of what is said and meant.

I put them on the same level as those standard phrases that people say without even thinking of the deeper meaning such as "bless you" or "I love you".

Those terms have become part of the everyday routine that nobody really pays attention to what the deeper meaning is.

Do you really mean that those people that sneeze need to be blessed? Who would do the blessing? A priest?

What about the standard "I love you" that you give without even thinking of the meaning of the phrase just because you have heard it and told it thousands of times before for the past 25 years in your case?

You say you need validation but "you look nice" has lost all its original meaning because it is said so often that people don't even realize they say it.

On the one hand, he should understand after 3.5 years that you enjoy being complimented. On the other... he does seem to try. So I think you are both kinda at fault in some ways. He should make a greater effort to give you compliments that are meaningful and you need to understand that maybe that just isn't his thing. Surely you knew that earlier in the relationship and still stayed with him right? I guess the best thing to do is talk to him about it. Don't come off needy but just mention it to him when you can fit it in a conversation naturally. Also don't expect to be constantly thrown compliments to feed your ego.
