Ladies: Would you be okay with a man getting you an engagement ring that he thinks would look good on you regardless of your taste in rings?

I'm not even in a relationship, let alone thinking of proposing yet, but I've always contemplated this.

I've always felt like a ring should be symbolic of my love for a girl. So if I like a ring's aesthetic and think it would look good on her, that would be the ring I get for her, and if she doesn't want it, then that's that.

Would you be okay with a ring that is to the guy's taste and not necessarily your dream ring?

See, the idea that a woman would pick out her own type engagement ring seems ridiculous to me for the simple reason that the process of asking a woman to marry you was traditionally done with a ring that was already in the guy's family. Gems and things were rare when the tradition started and there was more of a focus on bringing this new person into the family with a symbol of a family treasure.

There was a deeper intensity to these things back then as well. (Of course... the ORIGINAL intent was to "mark" the woman with something indicating that she's taken, so it always makes me chuckle when some so-called feminist whines to her guy about getting an engagement ring.)

Now? I literally saw a woman stage SUCH an intense protest about the cut of the ring her man got her that she was tossed out of Harry Winston's by security. What a brat. You didn't get your princess cut because he picked a square cut? You want to trade it in? Go cry about it somewhere else... Just down the street is someone sleeping in a heap of trash to stay warm... Idiot.

Funny thing? I was talking to my childhood friend yesterday and she told me she NEVER wears hers bc she can't stand any jewelry at all... so the guy spent a ton on a ring for her for no reason...

It's whatever he wants. The ONLY thing I would want him to remember is that I'm allergic to yellow gold ( I break out in hives).

Of course. When I was proposed to, I was given a family ring of several generations. I was so humbled and felt incredibly honored. A girl would have to be borderline insane to not get how priceless that is.

I'm sure I would be. I never got an engagement ring. We were only engaged for a couple of hours. lol. After we got married, we went and picked out wedding bands. He wanted to buy me something more, but I just wanted him and a simple wedding band. I got a yellow gold love knot ring with some small diamonds in it. 10 years later... I still love the ring AND the man!!

I like to think one day I will get married to my boyfriend and when that time comes I would accept a ring pop. When you love someone it doesn't matter what the ring looks like or how much it cost.

I would hope he knows me well enough to get what he knows i want. And then he could add his own personal touch to it with the engravings. But either way, im not gonna turn down the ring no matter who picked it out

as I'm the one who will wear it, I would like to be involved in the process of choosing the ring or at least setting the requirements for the ring
