Is trust given or should your romantic partner have to earn it?

One of my friends was supposed to get married in December, but he just called me to tell me that he and his fiancée broke up because they had different definitions of trust.

Her definition: Trust must be earned. She said that he had to show her certain things in order for him to fully earn her trust. He said she was treating him like he was guilty until proven innocent.

His definition: Trust is given from the start. Trust is only revoked after it’s been violated. So he has a more innocent until proven guilty mindset.

What do you think of trust in a romantic relationship? Should it be given? Earned? Somewhere in the middle?

I am definitely having trust issues and it destroying the relationship. I am always suspicious. So I think trusting 100% is important. if she cheats I will be hurt either way. So just trust until given a reason not to
