1.1K opinions shared on Other topic. This is a fabulous question.
It depends on the type of relationship. For example:- Child/Parent Trust: Kids trust their parents implicitly/unconditionally from the moment they pop out into the world. This sometimes doesn't change EVEN IF the kid is in a toxic/abusive home. Logic can't explain this one. Some kids ultimately learn NOT to trust their parents and are consequently too emotionally scarred by that to be able to trust anyone.
- Friendly/Platonic Trust: Friends tend to trust one another to a point. That's usually earned over time through shared experiences. This is where friends with benefits situations gum up the works, though, because the two people likely trusted each other enough to get physically entangled with each other... and then find out there's no chemistry... start being evasive... and trust evaporates.
- Partner/Relationship Trust: In dating, you're supposed to be looking for things to build trust and as you move along in the association you choose to become partners based on mutual trust earned over time.
- Blind Trust/Benefit of the Doubt/Trust By Association: SOME people have a "trust by association" sort of benefit because you know their family or circle of friends well enough to incorporate them into your world without putting them through the usual sort of "trials" you use to test another person's values and establish trust. This is the trickiest/messiest situation to be in because you THINK LIKE you know the person and CONFIDE in them, but they haven't earned your trust so they treat it like a cheap commodity.

About child and parents trust, I'd say it is complicated but also very (psycho) logical. Parents being no less than gods for an infant, if those gods consistently show negative behaviors in response to a kid in the process of developing trust then trust towards can only become negative, undesirable as a result

@Maybe_Maybe_not TRUE, absolutely. A parent's job is SUPPOSED to be sacrosanct because you literally hold someone else's life and future in your hands. Too many people focus on "getting married" (the wedding day, NOT the actual daily cartaking and life-building and eternal love and trust that it's supposed to be) and of "having babies" (because they want to have one even if they're the worst type of person to have one due ot low EQ, lack of depth/compassion/etc that make good parents *good* at tending to their kids). And in this increasingly self-centered world the problem's just getting worse and worse.

1 yOnly immature person can give it all till it's broken. Give it all before broken means you are ready to risk your own stability, or health even for the person that has yet proven to be trustworthy or not. For example you can give them all of your life savings if they asked for it. Or you can give them your kidney even if they asked for it. Without even knowing that person is trustworthy or not.
With life experience and maturity people understand that we cannot trust anyone completely.
So most of people first give them a little bit trust, and further that person has to earn more themselve their own.
If we meet some stranger we trust them a little that that person will respect us, will not hurt us will not harm us. Then further their words and actions decide how much we can trust them upto which level. And it's very rare that anyone can trust anyone completely like 100% and it's more rare that they do so and not get hurt.31 Reply

1 yWhile you can initially "give" someone the benefit of the doubt, trust is generally considered to be earned over time through consistent actions and behaviors that demonstrate reliability and integrity; meaning you need to prove yourself trustworthy to gain someone's trust.
Key points about trust:
Earned through actions:
Trust is built by consistently demonstrating trustworthy behavior, not just by saying you are trustworthy.
Takes time:
Building trust is a process that requires time and repeated positive experiences.
Can be broken:
If someone acts in a way that contradicts their trustworthy behavior, trust can be eroded.00 Reply
1 yI wouldn’t automatically “trust” anyone , maybe that’s a me thing in light of my childhood or experience / relative maturity , and I’m never complacent with it. Over time assuming unbroken I would be less focused on it but never taking it for granted , nor would any expect any different from others.
I think to some extent we need to offer a little trust upfront being vulnerable then reward with mire as it’s proven deserved.
The people that are generally more trustworthy are the listeners and those that are more selfless00 Reply

1 yTrust is a two way street that both persons need to earn that in one another. I do agree with that I think if two people over time start trusting one another more and more that’s healthy but once someone does something that forever damages that it’s over

1 yWell, what I do when I meet somebody and I like them and I feel their good vibes. I give them all my trust and one time they mess it up. I’m completely done with them.
So it is given, and it is earned, and that’s the truth of it
You have to show somebody a little bit of trust in order for them to know what they need to earn23 Reply

Trust comes with exchange of little insignificant favors without being exploited, we call it "one hand is washing the another". It takes some time and effort, that's why it's earned.11 Reply

1.4K opinions shared on Other topic. I think to trust other people you have to have a certain amount of confidence that even if they betray you you'll be fine but then it also takes a person who is trustworthy on the otherside. In the early parts of my life I didn't rely on anybody because it was easier and more consistent to just do things slowly and steadily myself than to risk getting let down by someone but now I'm more open to it :)

What I always find funny is the people who talk about "respect" and demand it, are usually the ones who deserve none.
Also "respect" like "love" is something most people misunderstand more than understand.

1 yMost people give some fair trustful to each other to some extent.. Like I trust the average person not to do anything heinous to me or to have any ill will.. But you gotta earn some of the more intimate types of trust.. Like to be somebody good to be around and loyal..

1 yI think a little bit of both for me I give you a little bit in the beginning because I try to give everyone a blank slate, but also not the entirety of me and it also depends on what role you’re trying to play in my life

1 yNormal trust can be given depending on the circumstances like I wouldn't entrust a random person with my life however if I have to go into heart surgery then I would trust them with my life as the doctors are properly trained but that real trust when you can show whats really hurting you that is earned

1 yDepends entirely on who is giving the trust. It is how some people have their trust broken because they give it too freely. There are others who never give it because they've been harmed too much.
In my opinion its better to be optimistic about a relationship but to give trust when it deserved.10 Reply- 2.3K opinions shared on Other topic.

1K opinions shared on Other topic. I trust everyone until I have a reason not to. That doesn’t mean that I am gullible and believe every word spoken. But for those who feel it has to be earned at what point has it been earned? And what do you feel if it isn’t given to you because someone feels you haven’t earned it yet?

4.7K opinions shared on Other topic. A small amount can be given freely, but beyond that, it must be earned. The more you trust, the more deeply you can be betrayed, which is why trust beyond a basic level needs to be earned over time.
