Hi everyone! So we met back in college and it’s been about 10 years. I had a crush when we first met and I confessed after a year ish of knowing each other, but he said that he wanted to keep our friendship the same and basically told me that he thinks I don’t have real feelings for him and I was just confused. So I got over my crush and I’ve dated a few guys (for a less than a month each, so nothing serious). But a few weeks ago I realized that I’ve basically been single for the past decade and didn’t even notice.
I text my boy best friend basically from the time I wake up until I go to sleep about any small thought I have. And it’s been like this the entire time. If he’s busy, he literally wants me to spam him and then he’ll come back and read every single thing I said and reply to everything. A few years ago, I tried to talk to him less and he got kind of upset/worried so I just went back to normal 24/7 texts.
I kind of feel like he’s been an emotional crutch? I don't know. I always tell him about what’s going on with me and he replies and sometimes tells me what’s going on with him, but we don’t equally talk about ourselves.
After school, we moved to different cities so we mainly see each other on holidays and he always visits me on my birthday.
He did have a girlfriend for about two years, but he never told me about her until after she broke up with him and he was really upset and I think drunk and so I think he only told me about her on accident. Because after that day he never again mentioned her or the break up. And he’s never mentioned liking a girl or going on dates.
I was thinking about my life and what goals I want to set and I realized that I should probably start looking for a relationship if I want to get married and have kids one day.
I don’t know if I should say something to my boy best friend about how it feels like he’s taken the place of a boyfriend in my life or if I should just try on my own to emotionally distance myself.
