I don't think anyone is ever fully numb. I think people just look at the pros and cons and come to the conclusion that the juice is just not worth the squeeze. Even when you win you still lose. So they make the conscious choice to remain single. And they talk themselves out of feelings. Like for 15 years I just told myself dating wasn't an option for me. You can do it if you close that door, lock it behind you and throw away the key. And I'll add to that that life becomes infinitely easier when you don't co sider the opposite gender at all beyond friendship. Though I will admit this is probably easier to do as a man though since men typically do the approaching. A man can ignore all a woman's signs. A woman has to literally ignore all a man's advances. That probably harder to do.
