My boyfriend and I have been together for six months. We recently had a rough patch and broke up for a few days only to get back together. Anyway he and I were out today and we ran into some of his friends at the mall. I was excited because I hadn’t met any of them before. But when he went to introduce me, he said that I was his “friend” and not his “girlfriend”. This hurt my feelings, but I stayed cordial in front of them and didn’t say anything about it until we got into the car. I brought it up calmly but he automatically he started screaming at me and punching the steering wheel while driving. The car was swerving and It scared me so badly for I have never seen him get violent before. He screamed at me that I shouldn’t be upset because we recently got back together and he didn’t know how to label us. He said that I am ungrateful for all he does and he hates that I labeled us. He didn’t calm down for a long time and continued his scary behavior until we got to our next destination. When we got there I kept space between us because I was shaken up. He apologized and tried to be loving again, but I was still feeling weird about everything. I ended up letting him take me home, but the night’s events are still bugging me. My questions are this:
Was I overreacting and should I not have been upset about the labels?
Should I be worried about how violent he became in the car? Is this behavior normal?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
