So what will become of us like this? When I don't call or text, he doesn't either. But the moment I do, he answers right away.

Time doesn't build trust, in my experience. A consistent series of positive interactions does. If you are going no contact then you are leaving him forever. Based on your post that is probably completely fine for you... maybe I am reading to much into your post... but if that is a correct interpretation then there is no reason to care what your ex wants. They need space to move on with their lives, too.
