Guys, What does my ex want?

Okay so my ex of 6 years cheated and broke up with me in the most brutal way imaginable, i had to reach out to her to get answer he laughed in my face then she pretended she was going through break up with him got me to open up and they both mocked me.

Recently his dog died, who I cared for for 6 years when we lived together he emailed to let me know she had passed and said this "There isn't an hour of each day that goes by where I haven't thought about you, and how much I hate and regret how I treated you.
I'll never forgive myself for how I handled things and I think about it everyday." "Without you, and now pearl gone from my life, nothing feels normal. It all feels so unhinged.
I regret so much about how I ended things and how I treated you. You deserved so much better, and so much more. I can't express how sorry I am for everything"
Does he just feel guilty? Or what is he doing?
