Do people only talk to you when they want something?

Are there folks in your live who only approach you when they need something and then vanish till the next time they need something? What's your response to that?

I have a friend that all he ever talks about is getting girls and he seeks out my advice on every girl that he likes what to do what to say what to ask her and then I give him great wisdom to go to the gym and work out and what to do and what kind of protein drinks to drink so he can get in shape, but he never talks about me what I’m up to or anything and he left me hanging on Thanksgiving instead of coming here he’s been doing this for the past year and a half and he’s older too. He’s not a young guy one time he wanted to pick me up to take me to his church just so I could talk to a girl for him and build him up a guy his age doesn’t know how to talk to women and he is a normal guy It just can’t talk to women and on things buying a $4000 bed buying a $50,000 car, horrible mistake maker and I have to help bail him out to of bad business decisions I finally told him a few days ago how I felt about him and the guy doesn’t have the maturity to even apologize and say you’re right

I am the president of two organizations and alumnus advisor for a group of young men at the local state university, so I have that experience quite often. It doesn't mean the same thing to me that it does to you.

Yes.

As far as I know it it is my decision what I do.

You only give what you want to or don't.

So I don't complain. I share what I think is ok.

I set my priorities.

And maybe I get something too. Amd if not it is also ok.

You needn't always get anything for what you give or do.

People talk to me when they want to talk or want my company which I'm happy to give. Other than that, I don't currently have much to give so I can't see people wanting to talk to me to get something from me.

Sometimes it feels that way, yes.

But I’ve learned to pay attention to the pattern, not the moment.

If someone only reaches out when they need something, that’s not connection, that’s convenience.

I don’t mind helping people I care about,
but I won’t mistake selective attention for real presence anymore.

I keep a small circle of really close friends so luckily I haven't had to deal with the kind of people as described very much thankfully. Having said that, yes I've had people in my life that are pretty much snakes in the grass. They come asking for money and disappear, they meet up for free drinks and it's radio silence after.

Nowadays I just don't bother entertaining any of their attempts at reaching out to me. Not worth the effort at the end of the day.

There are some people like that, but it's pretty rare. If I can oblige them, without inconveniencing someone or derailing my plans, I usually do my best to help.
