52 year old M and 39 year old F, can it work?

Hi All,

I've just turned 52. I've been single for a while as a separation in my 40's was such a nightmare I thought I didn't want to go through that again. Now those years have been good, I did a lot of things I wanted to do including a complete career change and was happy alone.

Since Sept. last year I have been studying part time and met this amazing woman in the course. I was immediately drawn to her but decided just some harmless flirting was OK.
We get along well and some of the other students often joke about us getting married and telling us to stop flirting.

However, whether I like it or not I have developed feelings for her. The thing is, she is 39 years old. Now I look after myself and am pretty fit. People look shocked when I tell them that I am in my 50's but nonetheless, I am.

Having been "out of the game" as it were for a long time I was finding it difficult to find the right way to tell her and ask her out. But then this week we were chatting about her upcoming 40th birthday and she said, without irony "Then I will be officially old"

So, that's means she sees me as an old man. Is 13 years too much of a gap?

What do you think?
