What is the most important idea in a long term relationship to you besides trust?

I was talking to someone earlier about long-term relationships and how far capability creates a sense of mutual respect. The comfort in knowing you’re both capable people.

Someone responded by talking about worldview, politics, culture, etc. Basically cling it a cold professional opinion. And some other stuff that I think was kinda beating on herself. (Not giving enough credit)

You NEVER know who you’re going to end up with or why. I’ve been with people my friends were like “uhh… you sure about that one?” And I was like 🫦🌹💃🕺 “shut your stupid face up, I like you better when you use those lips for eating.” (I’ll get him a box of cannolis.)

I feel more connected to someone who shares my excitement for life, and who feels like they’re IN the game of life with me. Someone who I can pass the ball to if things look like they're about to go out of bounds, even if they never have to.

It’s less about money or intelligence, more facing life head on together. I'd rather be with a moron who does that then a genius who doesn't.

It doesn't make you a less valuable person to want something else either.

Is that shallow?

I actually disagree, I believe, and it's a practical belief, we fancy and end up with certain personalities, therefore certain relationship dynamics, for reasons written in our history.

I look at trust or communication, or any other overused relationship trope as simply basic requirements, to the point they're not even worth being mentioned. But that's me. And my luck, if I hadn't been lucky, I could have looked at trust as something rare. I don't, it has always been very common, in my experience.

What has been uncommon, therefore it is what I want the most from from her, is... A mutual understanding of how this life, this world, people and us are quite strange but intriguing concepts.

You nailed it. That’s not shallow at all, that’s alignment. Besides trust, the most important thing long term is being on the same team emotionally. Same energy, same “we face life together” mindset.

Worldview and politics matter, but if someone won’t step into the arena with you, it kills attraction over time. Shared excitement, resilience, and mutual effort are way sexier than IQ or bank accounts. You’re basically describing emotional compatibility plus life-partner mentality, which is relationship gold.
