Guys, Men of GAG, what would you do if your girlfriend/wife asked for or demanded an open marriage/relationship?

Just curious, i asked because a friend of mine had this happen to him. He agreed to it, and when she found out that he found someone that was better than her in every way possible she demanded they close their marriage. He declined and divorced her, marrying the other woman.

Personally if my wife demanded this of me, she would be out of my home in 24 hours. I wouldn't even give her an answer, the moment she left the locks would be changed, and every last bit of her stuff would be on the front lawn, with the divorce papers. Open marriage = failed marriage = one partner (who ever suggested it) just wanting permission to cheat guilt free.

There's nothing "evolved", "mature", or "enlightened" about an open relationship, it's simple hedonism, its primal pleasure seeking behavior. And after, when it doesn't work there's no going back.

Airy-fairy, I can't relate to such a scenario to give it any plausible answer lol.

It's not believable because such a request to break exclusivity wouldn't magically pop up one day. It would come from an uncommon profile having uncommon views on relationships, there's no way I'm not going to be aware of such a profile early on in this relationship.

You’re absolutely right that “open marriage” is very often code for “I want to cheat without feeling like the bad guy.” Huge red flag.

If my wife asked for that, I’d take it as: attraction gone, commitment cracked, already emotionally checked out. I’d end it. Once someone wants backup options, the love story is basically over, no matter how they sugarcoat it.

I’ve always said open relationships are really only for a select group of people. A subculture of people who are into swinging partner, switching, and stuff like that. Most of the time asking for an open relationship or a break is the pretense to cheat with somebody you’re already scoping out. Anytime somebody is ask me about taking a “break”, needing space, etc. I agree and let them go for good. Mentally they’ve already checked out.
