Do You Believe That People From Older Generations Had Much Deeper Feelings Of Love For Someone That The Younger Generations Just Don't Feel The Same?

What prompted me to ask this question was that yesterday I spent my entire day listening to old love songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's and the lyrics in most of those songs love sounded like they felt love very deeply. It was very apparent.


I'm not asking if the MEANING of love has changed. I'm asking if the FEELING of love inside of a person has changed and if so, what is the difference?

I don't think they had deeper feelings - I think they had FAR more realistic expectations. Most people in the past didn't expect a supermodel or an Abercrombie model, they didn't have height standards, or expect 7 figure incomes, etc. etc. They didn't expect their lives to be perfect, happy every single day, and completely free of difficulty or boredom or disagreements. They understood that there would be plenty of difficulty and strife ahead, and that the idea was to manage it TOGETHER. Obviously not every last person felt this day, or did this perfectly, but in general, people had much more realistic expectations.

Today, people want TV sitcom relationships where everyone is hot and beautiful and rich and has no big problems, and lives a lifestyle that you'd need to be in the top 5% of income to lead in real life. That's insane and toxic, and so it's no surprise that most people can't keep a relationship together. People also don't even vet their potential partners for long-term compatibility today - everything is about how excited they feel RIGHT NOW (infatuation), with almost no thought given to a year from now, or 5 years from now.

the whole concept of love changed ever since the “sexual revolution” which came about when contraceptives became effective and widely available.


Love used to come from a place of scarcity
It’s rare therefore precious.


But today you can get love anytime anywhere
It’s too abundant therefore undervalued.


I don’t like my partner’s chewing noise?
I can swap them for the next door neighbor.


It’s too easy and too inconsequential


There’s no more slut shaming (for men and women alike)


It used to be that divorced people were stigmatized as bad partners and would struggle to get another partner.
Now people collect divorce papers like Pokemon cards and no one bats an eye


There are advantages to modern day social dynamics for sure


But they do come at a cost


And the loss of the romanticized love is part of that cost

I think the younger generations feel just as deeply about love as the older generations. I think the difference is their commitment. The younger generation is not as committed to their partner as they are to themselves. It makes me frustrated and sad when I hear their mantra “I am working on me,” or similar sayings exalting themselves. Yet, they long for love. They are lonely and listening to old love songs too.

I don't know if I belong to the old, older, slightly older generation or somewhere in between. I still believe in deep feelings and in exclusive feelings for one person. Although there have been several who were and are still important in my life, I always looked for the one and only. I'm probably too romantic for my own comfort.

I think like you say, most of the songs in that era were love songs, and I think the music was far better too.

But there is a limit to how many ways music can be played, and if an earlier generation has already discovered all the ways, no matter how loving subsequent generations are, they'll never match that period for the music.

since the decade of the 90's... the number of adults 40, 50 and older have been divorcing more and more and then some more on top of that, they even call it the "Gray Divorce"

so, that can only mean one thing... when they were singing all those "deep love" songs and reciting all those vows, they didn't really mean it "forever" (the highest divorce rates happen among the people aged 55 to 75)

it had an expiring date...

I feel like they had at least a direction for their lives. I mean the point of seeing someone was to marry and have a family or something. Loving someone wasn’t that complicated right now it is. Lots of types of a relationship and it’s almost impossible to find someone you are both attracted to and also sharing the same prospect of a relationship with you

Past generations were actually ALLOWED to love someone fully and deeply. Nowadays it just isn't socially acceptable; it's not cool anymore.
It's really sad.

There's a general problem in asking whether older music was 'better': nobody remembers all of the garbage that was put out in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s. Most likely you are listening to songs from the top 20% of songs released during those periods... then drawing comparisons with 100% of songs put out today.

Of course good songs are better than average songs.
