You may not know it, by what the news media, the so-called "social-scientists" and Hollywood does and says about the many, many failures of marriage, but the real truth is that the greater majority of those who get married, stay married. The count is somewhat skewed, because so many of those who get divorced are on their second, third, fourth or even more marriage, and the count appears to "prove" that neither love nor marriage lasts very long.

In reality, if you really do love your partner, and they really do love you, the last thing either you or they will want to happen is a split that will tear you both apart forever, not to mention any children. So the most important thing you need to learn is how to communicate with your boyfriend, lover, or fiance, or husband. Because if you both are talking a different language, you can really get the wrong messages, and the wrong answers to your seemingly simple statements or questions. Commitment is not a one day or one month or one year thing. And true love and commitment can survive a great deal of pain and suffering. Just because your relationship isn't wine and roses every day, doesn't mean it is the end of love or the end of the marriage. Every day is different, and some are just better than others, and some are just worse. It doesn't mean that it will always stay worse, just sometimes it can really feel that way, and can really hurt.

But that is just one more reason to really understand each other, and really, really work on the communication part of your life together. It is really easy to misunderstand, and take things the wrong way, even if the other partner never intended for you to feel that what they said was as bad as you may have felt when you heard it. The real test of any relationship is learning how to get over the hurt, the anger, and the pain of being hurt by someone else's actions or words. We do not have to stay angry, or hurt. We can express what the pain is, and try to get some mutual understanding about what causes the pain and the hurt, sot that both can learn how to adjust how they say and how they do things, that end up causing hurt and pain and anger. And if you can do that, your relationship has a much greater chance of lasting, than if you are willing to bolt every time you feel hurt, pain or anger, or every time you partner does, or every time either of you really breaks the rules of your relationship. That can be really devastating, but lots of marriages have outlasted those kinds of negative actions too. Forgiveness, being sorry, and truly trying to make a difference in the way each partner treats each other goes a long way towards making a relationship last too. I really think too many people expect their partner to never ever make any mistakes on purpose, if "they really loved me". That kind of sets up a no-win situation. Being flexible, and being committed means more than being perfect, it means being willing to forgive as well.

Gives us a (false) sense of security. People want some semblance of stability in their lives when the fact of the matter is that there is no such thing. There are illusions that lead people to believe that there is and its a nice dream. it may last many years but even if you find the "soulmate" and you stay together till death it still won't last forever since death will eventually come and end it. Logically it is really not worth it. but that hasn't stopped anyone I know including my self from trying anyway because people like that dream. people like that hope. even if it is destined to be failed illusion.

It does last when two people are committed, communicate, and are respectful towards each other. Sometimes people just aren't meant to be together, maybe they want different things in their lives, but like another answer said, its a learning experience.

I do wish I was done learning sometimes though. It's pretty shuttering when you realize your current is probably more of a learn than a last

If you don't "love" for stupid reasons (ONLY looks, prestige, he has a nice car, she has great t*ts), then you won't break-up for stupid reasons. The same applies for marriage.

I'd say infatuation doesn't last but I believe love grows stronger with time and you appreciate more and more what people do for you. As an adult I love my family more because I can understand what they've done for me more than when I was a child.

It can last. I doubt you've ever experienced real love being that you are under 18. Love and puppy love are quite a bit different.

an alternative way to look at it is to ask what is love and how has that term been seen historically? I think love is a moving target.
