What if no god or deity exists, and all of the conflicts caused by religion were for nothing?

Um, if no god exists, then conflicts fought over religion were MORE important. Think about it: if there is a god, or gods, then regardless of their opinion on the matter, religious wars were the closest thing to justifiable ones, because those fighting in them genuinely believed in what they were doing- that being of the wrong faith seriously harmed people. In that case, however, the gods could still straighten things out after the fact.

If there are no gods, then ultimate moral authority rests with humanity, and it becomes even MORE vital that we believe in what we're doing. And since there would be no verification of a religion's accuracy, all its value would be given BEFORE death, making it even more obvious.

I suppose that depends on what you mean, as from what I can tell most large conflicts weren't actually caused by religion although it has certaintly been used to spur people on and promote it. However I'd suspect, purely from the fact that every culture on our planet that we know of has or had a religion that the other option is far worse.
