If you are not his top choice, then that would sound like a failure in the loyalty test, unless, for example, he was dating another woman. God often brings opportunities to prepare and learn for one's future. Some people come into others' lives so that they can see themselves in a way that they cannot see on their own.

Based on how you worded the question, I don't see that as accurate from what your friend said.

Even after marriage 1 Corinthians 7 says this:
Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Ecclessiastes 4:12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
So even after marriage, each spouse is tempted and each has a responsibility to fulfill the needs of the other, pray for one another and build each other up. It is like each spouse having a strand of rope, the rope is stronger when you combine two strands by building each spouse up and the only part of a rope that is unbreakable is the part that's strength remains held together by Christ.

Your friend is wrong, unfortunately. Everyone has free will, and can choose to leave whoever they're with for someone else. You also have such free will even if both you and your man are good enough people not to use it to cheat or leave each other if you're married
