Is Thomas Aquinas opposed to Saint Augustine?

Thomas Aquinas argues that God has a different nature from whose creations. However, Saint Augustine thought that if man understands himself, he can reach God.

I always thought St Augustine paved the way for St Thomas Aquinas. you had to have the former first before the latter... i dunno.
