How do you know whether a desire comes from God or whether it is your own idea?

Like I always have this desire to protect weak and helpless people and I know that comes from God, but when I want a guy with attractive qualities, it might be my own thing and not God’s thing.

The answer may depend on what you mean with God. If out of convenience we use His name to embrace everything we don't understand that led to the creation of our universe, the Big Bang, and having evolved to the life we know on earth according the natural evolution, I'd say that whatever you imagine and do, it's in a certain way God's will. Or the Devil's doing maybe? ;0)

I'm aware how dangerous this thought is for people of bad will. In case of doubt it is very wise to ask for the advice of a priest, pastor, rabbi, immam, or whatever enlightened philosophical guide, or refering to the Law...

I would ask myself what purpose am I serving myself or others? God has never spoken to me in any conventional way but I'm beginning to understand that he only speaks to those that know how to listen.

Well God has endowed us all with your own self determination and ability to reason. So any suggestions to act on a desire regardless of it comes from God your own mother, it is your responsibility to determine if you willing to act on it.

More times than our own desires are ours, and God gave us the ability above all other creatures to determine our own beliefs and desires for ourselves. Humans are not like any other animal we find on the planet today, we are not solely driven by instincts or emotions. We have the ability to apply reason and logic, so your own desires are yours but your logic or reason to act on them comes from god.

Everything is God's creation, even your seemingly bad desires.

Mental and spiritual discipline is largely about self control and a lot of our ability to make decisions relating to that is from trying to understand the world we live in a little more every day.

This is why it's important to be introspective, learn from ours and others experiences and occasionally reflect.

One hint about this lies in God telling us in the Bible that even sinners are loved and one with God. You don't stop being one with God, people and existence because you made bad choices by mistake.

As long as you're doing the best you know how to do, you're doing the right thing in the eyes of God and any failures you have are meant to help you grow.

I'm not saying I do or I don't, but if I accept for the sake of this question God is real and absolute, then I would also have to accept ALL ideas be they good OR bad come from god too. Just because a bad idea enters your head, it does not mean you have to choose that path.. it could just as easily be a test.

But like I said.. I'm not committing to say whether i believe or not, only that if I did, then that would be how I'd view the concept of where the idea stemmed from.

you know what you just follow your heart. if God let's say give you a sigh that this one particular person is your soulmate and then you don't feel romantic feelings for that person maybe it is Satan giving you the sign. it should councide. the sign and what you feel should coincide because being with a person you don't have real romantic feelings is a sin especially if you will marry him/her. marriage is sacred.

I think an innate need to help out others is always there. People who join positions of employment don’t necessarily do it because God told them to. Some people do that because they feel empowered when they assist others.

in regards to finding a partner, stop thinking its all on you. And you can make mistakes. I find we are too fearful of making mistakes, we do nothing. Doing nothing is also a mistake.

Sin is sin, because of the outcome. The bible teaches right from wrong but we must read it. We live in a fallen world, so sin or error, will always be their. You can always pray, and ask the lord to reveal to you the right path he has for you and for him and his angels to protects you. Never know he might reveal what to stay away from ( Red Flags) in a dream.. Many ways he speaks to us..

I help people because it feels good to be able to help that person and perhaps I can learn a thing or two from them. How can I distinguish my will with that of God?

You have to make sure you're really helping and that takes discernment to do that you have to make sure you're not just enabling people
