How do you know if God wants you to move forward with something in your life?

Instinct, the drive and conviction that's something you want to do or achieve, motivation for all kinds of reasons, good or bad. In this no need to define what the notion God means, because this could as well be called Nature, Instinct, Karma, all kinds of circumstances leading you to continue on a particular path.

Personally I don't believe in karma. It's a concept quoted out of context too often. Apparently it's to do with your next incarnation, and as a Christian I don't believe in reincarnation.

I've found God speaks to me through my instincts and in 37 years as a Christian I've only not listened twice, with both times resulting in near disaster I needed divine help to get through.

Sure, I understand what you mean and have respect for your convictions. Concerning the notion of reincarnation, the significance depends on which level of symbolism we're talking. Changing from one emotion into another is one form of incarnation. There's no real contradiction with your belief in God. Karma on the other hand, as I understood, considers that a whole set of events leads to particular results, which is plainly logic.
