When did people have the freedom to say they are atheists in the west?

I´d say it developed in the 19th century as a reaction to the period of Enlightenment that lasted until the beginning of 19th century. In that time church attendance at least in some European countries dropped dramatically and people looked for different ways to explain the world.
That is the beginning of the turn of culture Europe is still influenced by.

Yes it started in the 19th century especially in the follow up of Darwin, Feuerbach and others that openly attacked religion and Christianity in particular trying to prove that religion is man made.

depends on the country you're speaking about. i don't think that you ever got in trouble in france/germany/spain if you didn't believe in god. those are the countries i know. can't speak about other western countries.

i mean all through out history. i mean in the early to mid 1800s you'd face some level of discrimination. but you'd still be free to be an atheist.

but you'd be as discriminated as let's say the jews. as in you were not allowed to learn a trade craft, as those were christian exclusive.

I am talking about freedom to say it instead of keeping it in private. In middle age, I don't think you could say you don't believe in god in Europe. In the second half of 19th century, people were more modernized in the west compared to older years. So that's why I asked the question.
