This may deserve a very lengthy answer, which most people aren't mentally mature enough to comprehend.
Sometimes it is translated from hebrew as "the opposer", not necessarily evil, just an opposition.
It could represent evil, greed, destruction and slavery. or materialism.
Or more complex occult meanings.
There are theistic and non theistic Satanists too, and even if there wasn't an entity named Satan, it would have been spawned as an egregore as so many people feed it psychic energy...
The Title belonged to many Angels, but Samael was the Satan. He was their leader. Great answers
In Hebrew, satan means adversary or opponent. As an indefinite noun, it doesn’t have to mean a specific spirit. As a definite noun, haSatan, or in Arabic ašŠaytān, he is the chief evil spirit of fire, according to the Qur’ān, G-d damned him for not bowing to Adam, and now he tries to deceive the human beings into doing the things that are against the will of G-d. It was the satan who persuaded Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, banishing them from Paradise, the Garden of Eden. We believe that the Satan is very weak, and We say ‘I take G-d’s refuge from the accursed Satan. He is NOT Lucifer! Misidentification of him being the Satan can be quite common. I also doubt he has those depicted horns and pig’s snout and tail and things. Fun fact: satan is an anagram of Santa!
Do you believe Samael is Satan then?
Are you talking about the prophet Samuel?
Samael the Archangel HaSatan
What tongue is haSatan/aššaytān called samael?
It's his name. HaSatan was just his title
Interesting. What does Samael mean? I know that -el, like Daniel, Israel, Gabriel, in many names means G-d.
It means Venom of God.
Toda raba, thanks.
This one's easy - there is no God and the Bible is part survival manual, part crowd control, part good ways to live. But it's a book made up by people. And any characters within the book are equally fictitious. The only thing you can say for sure, in terms of cross over into popular culture, Satan has the coolest imagery.
I don't believe in Satan, it's for me just a fictional character used in movies and co
Even if you don't believe in him. Who do you think he is in the Mythology?
Uhm Luzifer, the fallen archangel

Tucker Carlson has gotta be up there. I wouldn’t even know who he is, probably, except I’m taking care of my elderly father and he’s a big FoxNews guy. Almost everything that comes out of his mouth absolutely appalls me, just on a soul level. Very disheartening that so many Americans look to him for information and opinions. I’m admittedly not big on Conservatism in general, but the shit Tucker says is fucking atrocious and the opposite of what I consider to be the words of a decent human being.
He was among the most beautiful angels created by God but rebelled against God along with 1/3 of the angels and thus cast out of heaven.
He was/is a musical genius, among many other things.
He then came down to earth with his army of what are now known as demons, no longer angels, converting many of humanity, to seek revenge by reeking havoc on God's people.
Unfortunately, this is not a fairy tale as many believe.

Satan is all that is against God’s Word and Law. He is the God of the World and you see the world’s condition, right 👍
Are you a Gnostic?
I am a Rosicrucian. I thought you were Gnostic because you called him the God of this world. A Gnostic belief. The Word Satan is just a title. So I believe the Demon Asmodeus or Beelzebub fit that title the best.
I suppose the Angel Samael fits the bill too lol
Lucifer doesn't exist. His story was made up by the Romans. Lucifer is the Latin name for the planet Venus, and means Morning Star. Of course Lucifer could just be a Latin name for Beelzebub or Asmodeus. Beelzebub is the greatest adversary of God, and Asmodeus is the greatest adversary of the Jews.
My answer was he doesn't exist. He has no role or purpose.
Are you using Lucifer as an interchangeable name for Satan? None of these verses contain the name Lucifer
I know it does. But you mentioned Lucifer not Devil or Satan
With due respect, your question is essentially self-defeating. If you’re asking everyone about their own personal opinion about what/who the devil is, then you’re going to get a lot of different answers, which makes each of them essentially irrelevant. If you want the truth, you gotta go straight to the source of truth instead of asking 2000 strangers for their personal/subjective opinions.
Just a character in the bible used to illustrate/represent evil. Usually when I talk about the devil, I'm thinking of anything or anyone who is, in my opinion, the epitome of atrocious degeneration. A destructive evil.
Satan was an angel that turned away from God.
Any names?
I believe the only demons and devils that exist are the ones running around inside our hearts... which is where our battles should be fought.
An opposer, largely to Jewish concepts of godly morality. He isn't evil, he's literally just doing a job god set for him.
Satan is a metaphor for the selfish things people do that hurt others.
I see him as he was meant to be; gods persecutor. God made him to test peoples loyalty and faith, and that is what he did, from the garden to modern times.
He rebelled and got grounded! Happens to me all the time :)
This is the best answer yet!
No problem lol
An ex girlfriend. Great big tits, red hair, fat ass but evil
A evil man who hates God creation so he creates evil to destroy it all
Satan draws you away from the path of God.
Which Demon do you believe he is?
Or perhaps which Angel?
I don't believe he's a fallen angel so he's just a devil. Not sure how to classify.
Any in particular by name?
I don't know names. I know there is one Satan (who's the leader) and there are more of his kind that can be either good or bad.
Well there are numerous demons who lead Each other in Demonology. The classifications are not standardized, but Demons like Belphegor, Beelzebub, etc... fit what you describe.
Wow Beelzebub! I've heard of that one but I'm not familiar with these names. This Satan doesn't really have much of a name.
Beelzebub is the Demonified name of Baal God's greatest adversary and a Deity the Israelites used to Worship alongside God until they abandoned him and named him a Demon.
Interesting.
I suppose you could consider that a fallen angel, but not really.
Oh I don't believe in fallen angels. You're either born an angel or a demon.
So what do you believe Azazel is? Are there evil Angels. Can an Angel still be cast out of Heaven?
No I believe an angel can't be an outcast or evil. Angels were created as pure beings that obey god and don't even think about disobeying.
Interesting. So do you believe God Created the Demons or they were created by something else/always there? And what do you think about the story of Lucifer?
God did create the demons but some chose to rebel. I don't really know the story of Lucifer.
So Demons are just spirits who can choose to be good Evil or neutral in your belief? And the Story of Lucifer is that he was an Angel who was jealous of God's love for man and rebeled against God and Men before being cast out of Heaven along with his associates.
Technically but I don't believe his name to be Lucifer. Just like us humans demons have their own will.
While there are luciferians who see themselves different from satanists, most theistic satanists I think use satan and lucifer interchangeably. I'm actually kind of confused myself. I've picked up information all over, including the law of one and Rudolf Steiner material. I think the right way to go is gather all of it and form our own new perspective.
Beelzebub means lord (ba`al) of the flies, but G-d is the lord (adon) of everything that exists, but there must be a difference between ba`al and adon. We often call G-d Adonai, or my Lord.
Nothing "confusing" about little Satan, kiddo.
He's just the epitome of the "wrong" that creation can be lead to.
A mythological anthropomorphism of evil and temptation. “The fault... lies not in our stars but in ourselves”.
Cheers to the pitchfork & horns, that is how I roll.
I can't remember the exact quote or who said it but it was something along the lines of:
The only thing crazier than having an invisible friend is having an invisible enemy.
A major deceiving and murderous p. o. s. who will burn forever in the lake of fire.
The scapegoat.
For what in particular?
Why he is such is because he's the one that takes the blame for your own actions. Satan also been used to propaganda why someone may need to be killed. It's the same to been called a witch just an excuse to make up a reason for why you act the way you do, then it's also an excuse just to kill someone who don't agree.
Even if one believed in god and him you still have free will according to such bible therefore he's still not responsible for anything yet the bible blames him at the same time.
A story needs a protagonist and antagonist he is simply the creation to fill that void. Even better yet we know factually Satan wasn't mentioned until some time after jewish faith only coming up after AD now there was devil alike figure but it's a very different story.
And you can see how so called the devil changes just to fit the story.
Well the Devil Changes because that is a title. There are many many Demons that could be considered The Devil. The modern day rendition of Satan is kinda BS yes, but there is legitimate religious reasoning to blame Demons for things. Asmodeus literally kills people.
There is no legitimate reason to blame a demon for things or some other scapegoat. We all know they just made up these things up. We even know lightbringer was a stolen name from the romans which quite literally had nothing to do with a devil alike figure yet culture today when you say lightbringer everyone thinks of the devil not Venus. It's just another proof of how they take names turn them into other meanings, create the scapegoats and take ideals twisting them.
There is no such thing as a evil force willing people to do it's bidding. It's just called creatures doing natural acts then trying to balance those within a unusual state of a society. If you want to believe in other scapegoats like Asmodeus who's just a symbol for lust. "Ah look guys this person is doing something out of lust must be a demon named Asmodeus" "Oh wow your so correct how have I never thought of this before?" then you go ahead.
But I say nope don't bring that rubbish to me lol.
Well the Romans were the ones to use the name Lucifer. Asmodeus is wrongfully attributed to Lust. He is and was a Demon of Wrath. People expressing wrath is not the same as him literally killing people as he has been said to do.
Said by whom? Is their a trustworthy source of these so called killings? I can answer that one, no there isn't. There is just simply people who want to believe some old words of people making what clearly are just used to create a antagonist, create something that people can rally against, create something that replaces blame, create something that people can blame.
I mean it has as much evidence as the assassination of Julius Caesar. Back then people could only write things down. But you don't have to believe in any religion to discuss the mythology behind it.
Julius has way more evidence even just the little fact humans clearly exist is way more evidence but don't worry there is more evidence that proves that such history if you don't know that become a historian it shall help because you will realise we have a lot of history that can be learnt and proven without just words and words alone don't prove it. To compare the two is kinda insane.
Aye that's true which is why I am here saying the mythology needed antagonists so it gave you them. Making cool villains is someone's favourite part about creating a story, and I know it's mine which that's all these demons are. Villains to be blamed for real world actions that wasn't caused by them because they are just myths.
The same way people would hail Zeus or another deity for some reason and the same they would say a drought must be blamed on deity or demon or whatever else. Rather than the simple science they didn't understand.
Okay, but my Question is what deity or deities fit the Title of Satan?
Who is he, what Deity?
Didn't say he was. Though I am sure one could easily argue he is because at the end of the day it's whatever one wants to believe, if someone wants to say he is their god then shrugs. They are just expressing their own scapegoat like everyone else.
I say get these ideas out of your head that there is something mythical to blame for why things happen. But you don't have to you believe what you want, though you just asked what is he to me and I am explaining that is what he is a mythical thing that people blame things for.
Satan, AKA Beelzebub, is my ex wife.
Why did you marry Beelzebub? Lol
Damn. Goodluck with that then man
Satan is a fallen angel named Lucifer
If You read the Bible, it’s not the same being. Lucifer is actually a Latin name, and most of the Bible was written in Hebrew, Aramaic, or Koine.
@HippieVeganJewslim Nope, Satan was the highest angel named Lucifer. He rebelled against God because he wanted to be like God. God kicked his keester out of Heaven and he is known today as Satan. Satan convinced a third of the angels to join him and they are called demons today.
He's right though. Every single Angel has a name that ends in El, and suddenly there is an Angel named Lucifer which is suspiciously similar to the Latin name for the planet Venus "Lucifer"
@HippieVeganJewslim Yeah I know the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Arabic. I'm not interested in going down the rabbit hole just to find the origins of the name Lucifer. Last time I checked satan goes by Mini names it's hard to keep track of them all.
Angel of Light is his best one.
Arabic? Which part of the Bible was written in Arabic? Never confuse the Bible with the Noble Holy Qur’ān!
@Daniela1982 which part of the Bible says Lucifer? I most likely will be able to translate, as Lucifer is a Latin name meaning bringer/bearer of light.
@HippieVeganJewslim Which Bible do you read?
@HippieVeganJewslim Well it makes sense as Satan has been called an Angel of Light. What does the name Lucifer mean in the Bible?
The name Lucifer means “day star” or “son of the morning,” which aptly describes his intended role. His new name, Satan, means “adversary” because he became the enemy of God and all His people when he defied God.
@Daniela1982 I don’t read the Bible, but when I need to, the closest to the original Bible, translated to English and the original tongue. Is the name Lucifer really in the Bible? I doubt it is in the original Hebrew or Aramaic or Koine.
@TwoToTooTutu2 There were like only 3 angels that were named in the Bible. Michael, Gabriel, a
