No, not at all, if only because neither con artists nor "religions" (however one defines that term) can "make you" believe anything. What you believe or disbelieve is up to you, and either they've convinced you that something is true or they haven't.
In order for something to be a con, you must be"conned" out of something. If you are inspired by religion to help a group of refugees, maybe that isn't a con. But if you have to donate to Creflo Dollar's private jet. . . maybe you are a sucker.
Just sayin'.
No, religions usually has holy books as evidence, as bad as evidence you may think they are. The con artist in your question has nothing. Sounds more like the type of SJW who acts like you have to agree with them on everything or you are alt-right.
Have you heard of Mormonism?
"Mormonism is the religious tradition and theology of the Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity started by Joseph Smith in Western New York in the 1820s and 1830s."
"Joseph Smith said the Book of Mormon was translated from writing on golden plates in a reformed Egyptian language, translated with the assistance of the Urim and Thummim and seer stones. He said an angel first showed him the location of the plates in 1823... Smith said the plates were returned to the angel after he finished the translation. During the time Smith said he possessed the plates, 15 people were allowed to witness their existence. "
@goaded I did say USUALLY with a holy book.. And the con man in askers question is without evidence. Point was, suspicious evidence is still more evidence than no evidence, and if fake took more time to make than the conman with no evidence.
The point I was making was that the originator of Mormonism made up a story and people believe it. A better example is L Ron Hubbard and Scientology.
" In 1948 he described a method which could solve his financial problems. He has been quoted as telling a science fiction convention in 1948: "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."
-Methvin, Eugene H. (May 1990). "Scientology: Anatomy of a Frightening Cult". Reader's Digest. pp. 16."
I don't have enough info on the subject to make an informed decision.

religion is a con. i don't separate them from any cult. they don't get cultists for their religion. they get them for guns or sex or racketeering and b. s.. because to say they can't have their own religion is un-american. but yet mormons still have sex with preteens and marry more than one wife.
corruption is abound when it comes to those who enforce it. don't trust anyone!
