I hear people of 'faith' make that statement, and I firmly believe, (as a non believer) that we, have some control over our lives, how long we live etc. by the WAY we live, our health habits, and life style.

If you would only eat super healthy, do regular exercise and never leaved the house, I am sure you could live a very long live.
Each time you leave the house has a chance of getting hit by a car or getting stabbed by some thug. or get caught up in a shooting Every time you eat an animal product you are at risk of catching bacteria from it and/or increase the risk of heart diseases. Every time you smoke, drink or do drugs, you can limit your days as well.
Sometimes those things are worth the risks, other times not. It is up to you how much risk you want to put yourself in. This can determine the number of days you live, but not always. I had the sweetest next door neighbor lady who who had a mild case of agoraphobia and eat a completely organic vegan diet. She got colon cancer at age 41 and died 3 years later. She always regretted to not have ''lived'' enough.
As a teen and '20 something' guy, my friend and I always told each other to make the most of each day, as we never knew how many days we had to enjoy "life". Any time I balked about doing something, he would say "Hey, we only go around one time, grab all the gusto you can" We never used drugs, smoked or drank to excess. Sad to say that HE developed an alcohol problem a few years later and I don't know how he has handled that.
I believe that my days are numbered, and there are days allocated to us on this planet earth
It all comes back to free will, you can live a horribly life style and shorten your life span considerably.
You could number your days to tomorrow and walk in front of a bus or jump off a bridge. Or you could make the choice not to and live longer. Just like you could smoke, drink, do drugs and eat terribly or you could eat healthy, workout and live healthily.
It all revolves around free will for the most part.
