What would happen if the moon was just as close to Earth as clouds?

If its in orbit, the lower edge would be scaping the atmosphere making a wall of fire a hundred miles wide, incenerating the ground beneath. Tidal forces would shread it and rain rocks. The earth would melt, the oceans evaporate, and the atmosphere blasted into space. After probably 10s to 100s of millions of years the molten surface of the earth would cool enough for water to condense, but there might no be enough water left to form oceans, so its not clear if life would ever get started again.

I don't recommend it.
