Why is being a Christian controversial in New York City?

I moved to New York for work and people look down on my religion or find it strange most of the time. I thought New York was supposed to be a melting pot and accepting of diversity, other races, and religions, but people make negative comments when I tell them I go to church.

Being a true follower of Jesus Christ is controversial everywhere especially if you are opening your mouth speaking the truth of the gospel.
