Why is compassion and forgiveness considered the end-all most important values of life in Christianity?

Forgiveness is very powerful and a lot of people misunderstand it.

• Forgiveness is more for yourself then it it for the other person. It’s about letting go of resentment and anger which is can be a huge burden in your own life.
• You don’t need someone to apologize to you to forgive them. That’s reconciliation which is a different concept.
• Forgiving someone doesn’t mean you forget what happened or just let someone walk over you. Doesn’t mean you automatically trust them again.
• You don’t have to tell someone you forgive them.
• When you forgive someone it doesn’t always cure all the resentment you feel. But you have to keep reminding yourself that you have forgiven them when you feel that hate and anger.

This is a difficult concept to comprehend. There are few people in my life I have had held long time grudges against. But I have found that when I forgiven them it’s a load off my back. I haven’t forgotten about what they did nor say it’s “okay”. But it’s about letting go of resentment.

Forgiving people takes strength. People who misunderstand think it’s a sign of weakness.

I don't think it's easy to forgive someone like a Stalin or a Hitler. After all, they intentionally chose to be evil and they did damage on a much larger scale.

And I feel that way about some people today. Both in my personal and other groups of people who have willing committed to atrocities.

But you don’t have to forgive everybody in the world. Especially if you don’t know them personally or they have been long dead. I’m not worried about “forgiving” Hamas one way or another considering what they did on Oct 7th. But I don’t live in the Middle East either.
