Answer from the Left only: Why is it ok to mock Jesus but not Prophet Mohammed (Muhammed)?

The short answer? Islamaphobia and evangelical domination in the US. Promoting Islam means not treating muslims and their prophet like terrorists. Evangelical christians are the loudest voices in politics so they have more power and can survive being mocked.

I would consider myself a left leaning centrist. But that is a loaded question. I don't agree that it is fine to mock Jesus but not Muhammad. My answer is that I think we should mock prophet Muhammad to desensitize Muslims to it. Ridiculous ideas deserve ridicule.

Liberal atheist here. This is not something I do, but I understand the general sentiment (s).

Part of it is to put things into perspective or level the playing field. A lot of Christians seem to think themselves and their institutions perfect and untouchable ("I'm more humble than you, therefore I'm better than you"), while Muslims are all either terrorists, actively supporting terrorists, or passively supporting terrorism just by being Muslim. It's not so much "Islam is better than Christianity," it's more "You aren't as great as you say and they aren't as bad as you say."

Part of is that a lot of liberal Americans have negative first- or second-hand experiences with Christianity, but not with Islam.

Another part of it is... well, your own confirmation bias. I agree that Christianity gets proportionally more hate from American progressives and atheists, but it's not as bad as you might think. Christianity gets talked about more in the US just because it's the majority religion, but Islam still gets panned in atheist circles when it comes up. Plus, if you're a Christian, you'll notice every slight against you, whereas you might be so used to thinking negatively about Islam that you don't even notice when someone insults it.

One last thing. Maybe it's just my experience, but while I do see people call Mohammed a war monger and pedophile, I don't see many people criticizing Jesus himself. Most people think Jesus, as described by the Bible, was a pretty good guy. Remarks that he was a socialist or a hippie aren't attacks on his character, they're meant to shine a spotlight on the perceived hypocrisy of conversative capitalist Christians.
