When you are judging others, how do you decide if a person is "good"?
I believe that any person attempting to make the world better by minimizing harm to the world and other living things as well as fostering personal growth in others is good.

Well... I'd go for a combination.
Religion is a good hint. If they are Catholic, they are usually somewhat trusthworthy, even if inevitably imperfect.
Intentions are the key, as long as You can actually find out the true intentions of a person. If their intentions are good... This world is too much of a hellscape to always be a saint regarding one's actions.
And then, there are the acts of service. An evil person will refuse any acts of service due to their inherently hostile and egoistic attitude. Even if someone is an atheist and their intentions are mostly unknown, if they provide help for those who need it, they can at least be tolerated, and most likely, they can be considered good people.
Honesty is a double-edged sword. It's an important virtue for a good person, but if someone is honest about their evil intentions... They are hardly a good person, I guess, even if they are honest.
Kindness is quite the hassle. I'd say that kindness towards allies and neutral parties is important, but no one can be required to show kindness towards sworn, mortal enemies.
We're all inherently evil. It's a potential in all of us. Some people try to hide it but it's overwhelming to most people.
You find it hidden behind the smile of the billionaire "philanthropist" who just wants to see the poor uplifted but whose personal worth would pay off the debt of a third world country twice over and allow a population of millions to get out of poverty and stabilise the country with a government that was not in the pocket of a corrupt Western society.
Or maybe they could build schools in an inner city. Staff it for 15 years and help lift the neighbourhood out of the grip of the gangs with their drugs.
They don't. That says more than buying Twitter to give "freedom of expression" ever could.
Those of us not in the 1% can't hide it so easily. We have to live with the worst of it. As a result our evil gets hidden more easily.
Every day I've walked past hungry people and given nothing because I don't want to. I've had a friend call me because she didn't have food and not help her because it would mean I'd have had less. Not none. I don't do that often because the guilt eats me up, but I've done it. What really eats me up is how much she goes on with thanking me when I do help her. That really triggers my guilty conscience.
But we want to be "good" because somewhere deep down we know we were designed to be with a perfect creator. And we try to earn our way back.
What makes someone "good"? The only way is to spend time with the only truly "Good" person. And we just celebrated His Birthday
Happy Christmas xx
accurate description of greedy oil countries people in saudi arabia etc.
Not just Saudi. The entire West is still draining Africa and drowning the continent with compound interest on loans taken out 60 or 70 years ago. Most third world countries pay more in interest each year than the original loans were. The result is a billion human beings kept in extreme poverty to fill the pockets of Satan Klaus and the WEF fuckers.
The Bible says that one's religion is worthless to God if they do not help the vulnerable of society by meeting their material needs, combined with also keeping oneself away from the evil of the world. (James 1:27)
So I think empathy, being selfless doing what is right and good in all situations without wavering and showing favouritism, combined with following God's commandments is what I believe makes a person good.
Not just this but being slow to anger, and quick to listen without making harsh judgements also makes one a good person in my eyes, in a world that is so judgmental people who listen to you without shunning your actions are rare gems.
very "acceptable pretty words" but part of the reformation by luther iis that that book james "not apostolic authorship" and "rejected in early days". see
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther's_canon there
also you attached verses that were traditionally separated. worthless part was separated.
@strateguy632
Im not sure where your authority is from, so I take no heed from it, I am British so I am not familiar with a 'Lutheran Church', I don't know any Churches like this in the UK, maybe in the USA where Martin Luther lived Im sure Churches like this can be found.
The Bible verses I quoted are all from the Book of James so they cannot be taken out of context as you suggest. Im not sure if I have done anything to offend you because you sound quite passive-aggressive, I was merely sharing my opinion on the topic, or as you said 'acceptable pretty words'. haha
your reading comprehension of MY words was weak. no wonder you didn't notice your mistake in bible.
i NEVER said "out of context".
i even gave you a link...
empathy,
ability to change the point of view / perspective,
ability to listen and draw conclusions based on facts, not assumptions
courage to doubt and ask questions
not their actions?
@strateguy632 their actions give us an opportunity to judge them, but the question was "What makes a person good?" not "how do we evaluate if people are good".

In order to be a good person you have to be honest. Why you might ask? Precisely because if you’re not honest how would you ever really know someone is telling you the truth about any of the other subjects in this vote in a conversation. So you’re alright with someone completely lying about what’s important to you? As long as they say the right things? Irrelevant of the fact it’s a blatant scam. I wished I lived in the 50s to the 70s because it was back when most people still lived by honour. The most root saying that comes to mind might be, “without trust there is nothing.”
Being caring, empathy and sympathy, honesty, integrity
I go based on the intention behind what they output. For instance, just because a person might annoy me, I wouldn't view them as a bad person if I saw that they had good intentions deep down.
a genuine kind heart... makes a person good... comes from within
Someone that is a good person does good things for no other reason than it is the right thing to do. They don't expect a thank you. They don't expect a prize. Most importantly a good person stands up for true injustice not fake injustice pushed by groups of people, media, political figures etc
Good person isn't necessary cruel to those who don't deserve that. Bed people have the need to satisfy their egos while committing emotional seal clubbing on unaware people.
Ergo: Allowing your emotions to control your mind is often evil and controlling your emotion with your mind seems to be good. Somehow like in Star wars Universe the fight between Jedi and Sith.
Intentions tells a lot about a person. All the others are needed but if their intentions are bad then what good are they? Example like kindness.
you say "harm to the world" sounds like pollution issues?
but what about "harm to human"? pain and harm and losses?
prevent pain to human fetus? and its death is harm.
if breaking a window is bad harm, then killing a human fetus is worse than breaking a window or throwing a plastic bottle at the beach into sea or on sand.
without christianity people can't be good people. with it, more likely.
Most Christians have not been good people, because the bible has too much inherent evil. It approves rape, genocide, child abuse, murder, war, revenge, lying, gambling, etc. A good Christian is good in spite of the bible not because of it.
If a person cannot be good without a book to tell them how, then they were never good in the first place. It doesn't take much to realize that all living things deserve respect and that we should make our way through life hurting as little as possible and helping as much as possible.
i dare you to find ANY verse in bible to support even one of your claims "approved" here. lol. stop believing twitter n family guy!
Empathy or kindness
other then that I don’t judge
empathy is in speaking and feeling. what about actions?
All I care about is that she knows how to dominate that ass.
The way they behave, their thought process, the way they speak.
Doing what is God's will/desire for humans. This is how believers know the world is becoming more evil by the day.
what if gods will is "take civilians captive" is that good or justified because religion said so?
@strateguy632 I didn't say religion. I said God. Not the same thing.
what if gods will is "take civilians captive" is that good or justified because god said so?
Their dedication to faith, trustworthiness and good deeds.
Kindness, either hard to find or confused for hidden intentions.
Having a real love for people.. I believe that's the core of it all..
There's no such thing as a good person. Only Jesus Christ is good and pure.
if they have empathy/compassion, good enough morals and treat people nice
nice? a good person doesn't need to battle evil?
Compassion and kindness
I totally agree with you!
@wolfcat87 Thank you for the Like
