It means the speaker is willing to believe fantasies because they alleviate his fear of death, will also believing that his particular fantasy is somehow privileged above all others.

They also misunderstand atheism, believing that atheism is a positive assertion that there are no gods. That's incorrect. Atheism is the position that there is no evidence of any god, and hence there is no reason to follow any religion.

It's meant to mock atheists by flipping the script. Atheists criticize theists for having blind faith, theists respond by saying that it takes more faith to believe in nothing than to believe in God.

There's a lot I could say about that, but suffice it to say I don't think any atheist has ever been turned into a believer by that reasoning.
